This week's Learning in Year 1 at a glance!
Year 1Learning Link: Terrific Toys and Continents and Oceans of the world |
This term our learning centres on ‘Terrific Toys, Marvellous Materials and Continents and Oceans’. We will explore old and new toys, and learn who Margaret Steiff was. We will also explore seasonal/daily weather patterns and design and make a structure. We will look at the features of an Atlas, name and locate all the continents and oceans of the world and name countries of the UK and capital cities. At the end of the term the children will take part in a S=P+A+C+E themed challenge to practise the skills they have learnt during their first term in Year 1. |

Year Group Reminders |
Week Commencing: Monday 20th October Week B Monday: Little Wandle books due back in school. Spelling homework (orange books) due back and dictation in class. Story sacks come home. Face to face parent consultations in school for those that have booked. Tuesday: PE for 1T. Spelling books come home with new words. Wednesday: PE for both classes. Thursday: Friday: Flu immunisations. Story sacks due back in school. Little Wandle books will not come home today due to it being half term. A ‘Home Learning’ sheet and new flashcards will be sent home so you can continue to practise at home. Please return Barnaby Bear (1R)/Dudley Dog (1T) and the Class Sketchbook by today if your child came home with them last week. Children in red group (both classes) are invited to bring in an object linked to our learning to share with the class on Friday during Space for Me. Non-uniform day - raising the postage funds for the shoeboxes. Please make a donation on Scopay. Have a lovely half term! Reminders: All children should be sent in with a raincoat (with a hood) as we go out in all weathers. Please make sure your child has a named water bottle and an individual snack (fruit or veg) everyday. Please make sure all items of clothing are named. Boxes of tissues for the class are always very welcome! |
Reading for Pleasure |
Reading: Story sacks will be sent home on Mondays - please return on Fridays. Little Wandle reading books will be sent home on Fridays - please return on Mondays. Phonics: The ‘Home Learning’ sheets, that come home at the end of each week, show you the sounds and words the children have been learning throughout the week. When we teach new graphemes we will send home the relevant flashcards (for you to keep) so you can practise with your child. Spelling: Spelling homework comes home on Tuesdays and is due back the following Monday. Guidance is stuck into the front of the children’s orange spelling books. Please practise the spellings using the grid provided and write at least one sentence using one or more of the words. |

Creation and Covenant The children will continue to learn about how God created the world and all the things in it. We will be exploring what this means to us and how we are stewards of his Creation. You may like to watch this video with your child:https://youtu.be/LN-pV4yYIek |
English |
Oracy and Sentence construction The children will be planning and writing their own story based on ‘That Rabbit belongs to Emily Brown’. We will introduce adjectives as words that describe nouns. Handwriting We will practise forming the letters v, w and x. |
Phonics |
In phonics lessons this week, we will be learning four new graphemes: /ur/ spelt ‘ir’; /igh/ spelt ‘ie’; /yoo/ or /oo/ spelt ‘ue’; /yoo/ spelt ‘u’. Spelling homework is based on these sounds. |
Maths |
Part whole within 10 The children will be building upon their number bonds to 10 and looking at how to split a whole into 2 or 3 parts. |
Science |
Materials Children will be exploring how they can group different materials according to their different properties. |
Art |
Observational Drawing The children will be thinking about what we have learned this term to produce an observational pencil drawing of a toy animal. |
Computing |
Technology Around Us We will talk about how rules are needed when using technology and the children will design a poster based on this. |
History |
Sources of Evidence We will be looking at the different ways we can find out about the past. Talking to people, photographs, videos and historical documents. We will be relooking at some of these for this terms toy topic. |
French |
We will rediscover all the French we have learned this term. |
Music |
To listen and respond to music. To learn a song. To keep the beat in a song. To play an instrument to accompany a song. Can you find the pulse? Can you do this action on the beat? Can you play your instrument on the beat? Can you create a sound for the ‘tick-tock’ rhythm? |
PE |
Fundamentals Develop key movement skills which include balance, jump, hop, run, speed, agility, dodge, skip, coordination. Balls skills Track a moving ball and move their body to intercept or catch. Beginning to dribble a ball with my hands and feet. Throw overarm. Work cooperatively with a partner. Recognise changes in my body when I do exercise. Sending and receiving Throw and catch over varying distances. Develop rolling and tracking skills. Applying sending and receiving skills with your feet. |
Learning for Life |
Feelings We will be looking at strong emotions for the first time. We will teach them how to recognise different emotions in others. We will also learn that everyone feels differently about things and will have different emotions to ourselves. We will be sorting words that might be hurtful or kind. |
