Learning Link: Awesome Anglo-SaxonsWe will be learning what happened after the Roman left Britain, how first the Anglo-Saxons, and then the Vikings, came and settled in Britain. This will include some local History as Guildford was an Anglo-Saxon settlement. This will be further studied during our residential to Hooke Court and through the books we read in English. |

Week Commencing: 9th March 2026 Week A
Please make sure your child has their school reading book and homework diary every day in school.
Monday: Science Fair project deadline. Tuesday: PE for both classes. Wednesday: Thursday: Bring in any medications needed for Hooke Court. Friday: INSET Day - school closed
Looking further ahead:
Reminders: As the weather is wetter and colder, please can you send children into school with gloves and hats to wear during break, lunch and PE Lessons please. Base layers for sports are appropriate on PE days and ideally would be Navy blue in colour. School tracksuit trousers are to be worn in the winter to replace PE shorts. Please make sure your child has a waterproof for the wet weather. PE for Year 4 will be every Tuesday and on a Monday in WEEK B. Please ensure your child has a named glue stick. A Pritt Stick costs £1 and can be bought from your child’s class teacher or from the stationery shop each morning by the front office. We will be spot checking children’s uniforms, please make sure they are named as well as water bottles and snack boxes. |
Homework |
Please make sure your child has their school reading book and homework diary every day in school. Reading - please continue to read for up to 20 minutes each day and record in the reading record. There are questions in your child’s homework diary to support their comprehension further. Please record the questions you have asked in your child’s reading record, e.g 4a, 6c, 8b. CGP Homework books: Please complete Maths and English Spring Workout 8 for Monday 9th March. Spellings: These will be set on a Friday and due in on the following Friday. |

DESERT TO GARDEN We will be watching ‘The Miracle Maker’ and learning about the events of Holy Week; this will also involve watching the Year 5 Passion Play. |

WRITING We will continue to look at the features of non-fiction writing and begin to write and edit our own non-fiction writing. We will participate in activities with an author before using his visit to inspire our own story writing. Maths |
FRACTIONS Pupils develop understanding of equivalent fraction families, learn to simplify fractions, and apply this knowledge to add and subtract fractions including mixed numbers. Focus is on recognising relationships between fractions, using efficient methods, and recording calculations clearly. |
Science |
STATES OF MATTER Pupils learn that evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into a gas and understand that it happens more quickly at higher temperatures. Focus is on using correct scientific vocabulary and explaining the process in terms of particle movement. |
DT |
LAMPS None due to INSET. Please note, to make their lamps children will need to bring in a pringles tube and an ice cream tub by Monday 23rd March. Thank you. |
Computing |
LOGO We will be learning how to use basic commands in Logo using a text based programming language. |
History |
ANGLO SAXONS Pupils learn who the Vikings were, where they came from and why they travelled to Britain. Focus is on understanding their origins, motives and key aspects of Viking life. Gaps are addressed by reinforcing key vocabulary, revisiting map work and chronology, and clarifying common misconceptions about Vikings and their reputation. |
French |
To learn 8 phrases to describe the weather. |
Music |
We will explore major and minor tonality, and then listen and appraise pentatonic music to discover the differences. |
PE |
Gymnastics Safely perform balances individually and with a partner. Plan and perform sequences with a partner that include a change of level and shape. Understand how body tension can improve the control and quality of their movements. Watch, describe and suggest possible improvements to a performance. Fitness Develop speed, strength, stamina, co-ordination through dedicated exercises and personal challenges. Record results and consider exercises to improve results. Consider how exercise affects health and wellbeing. Tennis Develop the use of backhand and consider when to use it. Demonstrate increased technique with a continuous rally. Apply rules to the game and self-manage. Introduce the use of basic tactics to gain an advantage. |
