Reading for Pleasure

Book of the Week:

‘Old Enough to Save the Planet’ by Loll Kirby

RE

To the ends of the Earth

We will be exploring the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and minds, exploring how Artists and Musicians all around the world have painted images and written songs to help us imagine what the Holy Spirit is like and help us to remember how He can help us.

English

We will continue to read our class text, ‘Amelia Earhart’ and learn how statements are a type of sentence that express a fact or opinion. We will continue to work on using adjectives and conjunctions (joining words) to join our ideas together and add interest to our writing.

Handwriting

We will continue to write the days of the week with a focus on accurate letter formation and sizing.

Phonics

In phonics lessons this week, we will be rediscovering sounds that we have learnt before.

Spelling homework is based on these sounds and words.

Maths

Introducing Mass and Capacity

This unit establishes the use of uniform non-standard units (such as cubes and cups) to measure mass and capacity. This is an important first step towards introducing standard units and provides a simple practical context in which a range of problems involving addition and subtraction can be introduced. There is also plenty of opportunity to explore part-whole and part-part relationships: For example, if a saucepan holds 10 cups of milk and 4 cups are poured out, how much is left in the pan?

In this unit, children should also understand the difference between volume and capacity. The capacity of a container is the maximum amount of liquid that it can hold, whereas the volume of liquid in a container is the amount of liquid the container is actually holding. This can be less than the capacity.

Science

Plants

We will be collecting leaves in the school grounds and comparing them to other leaves.  We will describe them and then sort them into different groups.

Art

Printing

We will be making art by taking rubbings of different natural materials like bark and leaves.

Computing

‘Digital Writing’

Using Microsoft Word, the children will continue to explore more of the keys on the keyboard and add text. We will learn to use the Backspace key to remove text.

History

Planes Trains and Automobiles

We will be looking at the first cars and how the differ from modern ones.  We will learn about Henry Ford.

French

To learn 5 words for farm animals in French.

Music

Using one of our well known songs, we will begin to learn that the rhythm can be written in stick notation.

PE

Athletics

Children will start running at varying speeds intentionally and running over obstacles. They will start to develop Jumping, hopping and leaping in

combination and with changing distance. They will start to throw for distance with some accuracy.

Target games

Intro to key throwing skills, overarm and underarm technique is taught with the aim of throwing accurately at a target or zone. Children will also select the correct throw for different situations and change their foot stance independently.

Striking and Fielding

To develop underarm and overarm throwing. Children will learn how to collect the ball and how to get a batter out as well as beginning to keep score.

Learning for Life

Physical Exercise

We will be continuing to understand the importance of a healthy life and taking regular physical exercise.
