Learning Link: People Who Help Us

Welcome to Reception!

We are so excited about getting to know our new St Salvatore and St Henry classes and we know that we have a fantastic year ahead of us.

The first thing that we will be doing is making lots of new friends, learning everyone’s names, and finding out about each other and our school.

We are also going to be learning about the people who help us in our community. Not only those we turn to in emergencies, like doctors, nurses and firefighters, but also those who help to keep everything running in our daily lives. We are looking forward to hearing which jobs you would like to find out about and are hoping that we will have some visitors to come in and tell us about their roles.

Just before the Christmas holidays we will have a special S=P+A+C+E Day to celebrate and reflect on all the learning that we have done during our first term together at St Thomas’.

Year Group Reminders

Week Commencing: Monday 12^th October

Religious Education (R.E. Learning)

Please could the children bring in a picture of their Baptism, naming ceremony or a picture of them being welcomed into your family. If you don’t have a Baptism or Christening photograph, any special photograph of your child with their family as a baby would be lovely.

Parent Consultation Evenings

Monday 19th October (online) is the first parent consultation evening and Wednesday 21^st October (face to face) is the second evening. These will be available to book via SCOPAY and you only need to attend one of the appointments. Please keep an eye on your emails.

Following the success of last year’s collection, we are delighted to once again support this wonderful charity. This year, Reception families are invited to bring in the items listed below. Every contribution, however small, will help make a difference. Please bring your donations in by Friday 16th October. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

Home Learning

Phonics

Next week we will be assessing the children on the sounds we have taught so far. Please use this opportunity to support your child by going over the sounds and Tricky Words below.

Reading

Today is a very exciting day as your child will come home with their very first reading book. As discussed at our Curriculum Evening, please enjoy sharing the reading book with your child and record the title of the book and your reading in the reading record, before returning it on MONDAY. Please return the book and the reading record inside the large plastic folder so that it doesn’t get damaged in your child’s bag.

Phonics

As previous weeks the sound flashcards are for you to keep and use at home, so please remove these from the little zip wallet and return that empty inside the larger one, ready for next week’s new sounds. Please return the small wallet for the new sounds each Monday.

Topic: Creation and Covenant – 5: I know we should look after ourselves and each other

Scripture: God created the world and said, “Indeed it is very good” (Genesis1:31)

We will be talking about the fact that God created us and He says that we are ‘Good’. God is happy with us. He Loves us and thinks we are good. Because we are all special to him, we must try to look after ourselves and also look after each other.

Personal, social, emotional development

We will be talking about ways we can look after our bodies.

Literacy and Phonics

We will be exploring ways to be kind to each other and share our resources.

Mathematics

Week 5 – Comparison

We will be comparing the number of objects in 2 sets by matching them 1:1. Language is a key focus and we will be reinforcing the language of ‘more than’, ‘fewer than’ and ‘an equal number’ to describe how many objects there are in each set. As the focus this week is on countable things, ‘fewer than’ is used rather than ‘less than’ and ‘more than’ is used rather than ‘greater than’.

Understanding the World

We will be talking about different people who help us in our community such as nurses, doctors, postal workers.

Expressive arts and design

We will be acting out the roles of different community helpers, such as nurses, doctors, and postal workers with a visit from Little City. This will help us learn about the important jobs these people do and how they help our community every day.

Music

Rhyme Time Learning

The children will be developing their listening and speaking skills through fun songs, rhymes and actions. We will learn a new nursery rhyme and explore phonics sounds.

Physical Development (in PE)

Introduction to PE Unit 1

Introduction to PE Unit 2

Finding space, freezing on command, using and sharing equipment and working individually and in partners/groups. Take part in ‘adventure and fantasy’ themed activities which will develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, skipping.

Ball skills

Roll and throw with some accuracy towards a target. Throw underarm. Beginning to catch with two hands.
