Who’s who on the Governing Body 2018 – 2019
Mark Habgood was appointed a Foundation Governor in October 2012, and became Chair in September 2015. Mark is currently the Head of Analytics for Zipcar International, based in Bracknell. Prior to that Mark has enjoyed a number of different roles over 20 years in Analytics, Marketing and Project management. Mark lives in Merrow with his wife and three children, all of whom attend St Thomas’. Mark is a fully qualified rock climbing instructor and plays tennis regularly.
Mark has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is not a governor at any other school. Mark has attended most of the Learning walks over the year and comes into school at least once a fortnight to meet with our Headteacher, Mr Lewin.
Kate Carter has been Deputy Headteacher at St Thomas’ since September 2014, having taught in the school since September 2008. Kate is also the Staff Governor. Kate has taught in Catholic schools since 1996 in Surrey and Kingston. She is married, her two daughters attend St Peter’s and her son attends St Thomas’. Kate is a member of the Parish of Guildford and attends Mass at St Pius X.
Kate has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is a Foundation Governor at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Guildford. Kate is related to Andrew Combeer (our Local Authority Governor), who is her brother in law.
Peter Charlwood was appointed as a Foundation Governor in May 2016. Peter is currently a Director with Pfizer, working in Business technology as the Established Patterns Engineering Lead. Peter lives in Guildford and is married with three children, all of whom currently attend St Thomas’. Peter is involved in the parish with a team running the parish home groups, and when he has spare time is an avid DIY’er.
Peter has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is not a governor at any other school. Peter regularly takes part in the Governors’ Curriculum Learning walks.
Local Authority Governor
Andrew Combeer has been a Governor since November 2013 and is currently our Local Authority Governor.
Andy has two children currently at St Thomas’ and two at St Peter’s. He is a consultant obstetric anaesthetist at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust with management, leadership and educational responsibilities, in addition to his clinical duties. Andy is related to Kate Carter, Deputy Headteacher, who is his sister-in-law.
Andy has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is not a governor at any other school. Andy leads our Admissions sub-committee. In addition Andy regularly comes in to school to discuss Admissions and has attended many of the Learning Walks over the year.
Darren Della Maestra
Darren Della Maestra was appointed by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton as a Foundation Governor in September 2013, and chairs the School Resources committee.
Darren is the link Governor for Safeguarding and sits on the Pupil Development committee. He is a qualified teacher with over 15 years’ experience and is really passionate about inclusive learning and strong pastoral support for all learners. He is Head of Student Support at a Sixth Form College in Hampshire. He lives in Guildford with his wife and two children who attend St. Thomas of Canterbury.
Darren has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is not a governor at any other school. Darren is a regular visitor to the school in his role as Safeguarding lead Governor and also as our tennis coach!
Foundation Governor (pending)
Theresa Fogell has recently joined St Thomas as a Foundation Governor. Theresa is a qualified teacher and has spent all her working life in education. She started her teaching career in primary schools but after having her children worked in secondary schools. She has been a deputy head in a large mixed comprehensive school in inner London and more recently has been a senior leader in a Pupil Referral Unit. At present Theresa works part-time at St Mary’s Catholic University in Twickenham, as a Visiting Lecturer on the M.A. in Catholic Leadership.
Theresa has no business interests connected to St Thomas and is not a governor at any other school. Theresa lives in Guildford, is married, and has two grandsons who she often looks after. Theresa is a member of the Parish of Guildford and attends mass mainly at St Joseph’s. She is looking forward to getting to know the school better and attending the Learning Walks in the coming year.
Foundation Governor (pending)
Annabelle Green is a Year 6 teacher and the RE Coordinator at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Guildford.
Annabelle works closely with the parish of St Mary’s in Rydes Hill, organising school masses and developing the link between the school and church community.
Annabelle was appointed as a Foundation Governor in October 2018. She has a particular responsibility for RE.

Richard Holmwood was elected a Parent Governor in 2017. Richard is a senior manager at the British Business Bank, a wholesale development bank in the City which is backed by HM Government. He is a former Economic Advisor at Her Majesty’s Treasury and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. He is an experienced professional economist and strategy consultant and holds a Masters and MBA.
Richard lives in the Guildford area with his family. They all love the positive communal feel of St Thomas’. Richard is keen to support the school as it continues to go from strength to strength. He enjoys playing tennis and cycling.

Neil Lewin was appointed Headteacher of St Thomas’ for September 2015. As Headteacher, Neil is also a Governor and sits on every Governing Body Committee. Previously Headteacher of The Marist in West Byfleet, Neil started his teaching career at St Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School in Woking, having had a previous career as a corporate lawyer in the City and then as a lecturer in law. Married with two adult sons, Neil lives in Four Marks, Hampshire.

Sam Morrison was appointed as a Parent Governor in October 2017. Sam currently works for Surrey County Council and is Principal Commissioner for Social Care and Well-being across Children, Schools and Families. Prior to that Sam has worked in a range of strategic project management roles in Local Authorities across the South.
Sam is married with two children and lives in Guildford. Her eldest daughter is currently in Year 1 at St Thomas’. The family attend Mass at St Joseph’s where Sam is part of the Children’s Liturgy team.

Nicola Powell was appointed as a Co-Opted Governor in June 2017. Nicola is currently an Associate Director with EY (Ernst and Young), working in Human Resources. She previously worked for Baker Tilly (now RSM) and Barclays Bank also in HR.
Nicola is married with two children and lives in Merrow. Her daughter currently attends St Thomas’ and is in Year 1. Nicola and her family attend Mass at St Pius.

Helen Pryke was appointed as a Foundation Governor in November 2016 and sits on our Resources Committee. Helen is Commercial Finance Business Partner at Merlin Entertainments plc. She previously worked at Kimberly Clark and BOC. Helen lives in Merrow with her husband and three children. Her eldest son attends St Peter’s and her daughter and younger son go to St Thomas’. They attend mass at St Pius.

Mark Richmond was appointed a Foundation Governor in March 2016. Mark is an airline pilot at British Airways where, as well as flying, he has served as trustee of one of the company’s pension schemes and as an elected trade union negotiator. Mark lives in Guildford with his wife and two children. They all attend Mass as St Joseph’s.
