Year 3

Learning Link: Rock Across the Ages

As your children enter Key Stage 2, we step right back in time to the Stone Age.  In English, work will start in September with our text ‘The Stolen Spear’. We will make links in computing, art and design that will really bring this topic to life.  It will culminate in a celebration of our work. We will continue to develop our skills in computing and create simple algorithms and in Science we peer into the topic of light. In RE, our rich curriculum allows us to explore the topics of Covenant and Creation. Our foundational topics allow the cross curricular learning to come to life through The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and lead us into Mountains.

Year Group reminders

Week Commencing: 12^th October 2026

Week A

Monday: Trip to Butser Farm please bring packed lunch no nuts. Please come to school in school uniform (they can wear PE bottoms but mus wear their shirt, tie and sweatshirts). The trip is mainly outdoors, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly and that they have a rainproof outdoor coat to wear. The children may wear old trainers or wellies, as the ground may be muddy.

Tuesday: Autumn Term Workout 5 homework due.

Wednesday: PE for Year 3 – please come to school wearing PE kit.

Thursday: Yellow spellings books due in school for spelling test. New spellings will be given to the children

Friday: Stone Age S=P+A+C+E Day and Forest School.

Reminders:

We will be spot checking children’s uniforms; please make sure they are named as well as water bottles and snack boxes.

Please can each child bring in a named glue stick.

Following the success of last year’s collection, we are delighted to once again support this wonderful charity. This year, Year 3 families are invited to bring in the items listed below. Every contribution, however small, will help make a difference. Please bring your donations in by Friday 16th October. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

PE for Year 3 will be every Wednesday and on Mondays in Week A.

Homework

Maths and English homework will be set on a Tuesday and due the following Tuesday. Please can children complete Autumn Term Workout 6 in their CGP Maths and English books. Set on Tuesday 13^th October and due the following Tuesday 20^th October

Spellings set on Thursday 15^th October and due for the following Friday 23^rd  October.

Each week, the children will be set a list of spellings to learn for homework. Sometimes the spellings will follow a pattern/rule and sometimes they will be statutory words that do not follow a set rule. 

We ask that children practice the words at home at least 3 times during the week (in this book) and then write at least 5 sentences using the spellings. Each sentence should contain at least one of the spelling words. 

These spellings will be tested each week in a list and one dictation sentence.

Children will be learning that as human beings we imitate God through our care for each other and that caring for Creation is one of the ways we care for each other.

Writing linked to The Stolen Spear by Saviour Pirotta

Children will be writing a short narrative story focusing on utilising the key features we have built up with our previous text types and using direct speech. This will be based around our book The Stolen Spear.

We will begin to identify pitch patterns in songs with three pitches. We will be introduced to dot notation for high-middle-low pitch.

Fundamentals

Balancing, running, jumping, hopping and skipping. Changing direction with balance and control. How does the body move at different speeds? How to speed up and slow down.

Netball

Make use of all pass types: Chest, overarm and bounce. Begin to understand court positions and some rules.

Football

Control the ball with feet and begin to dribble. Begin to use space and mark opposition players.
