SATs are done and dusted and Year 6 are off, Looking smart in their Leavers’ Hoodies and somewhat bleary eyed but they are off… First stop the Eurotunnel and then eventually Grandcamp Maisy in time for dinner tonight.
I was glad I arrived in school just in time to see them off and my thanks to all parents who were so thoughtful of our neighbours too.
As we hear from them throughout the week so we will fill this page with photos and news – watch this space!
They have stopped en route for their lunch and journey is going well and to time so far – hurrah! All happy especially now they’ve eaten lunch!
More later when we have it.
Monday, 4.45pm UK time… they have arrived safely at Grandcamp-Maisy. A little tired from the journey but all in good spirits…
Games on the field in the evening.
Tuesday, 5.45pm UK time… Lovely day visiting Mont Saint Michel today. Sun is shining and everyone’s happy after a good first night and some well needed sleep for all!
They have had the opportunity for some retail therapy and are now heading back to the Centre to have dinner and then they will be playing games on the field.
(If, like me, you hadn’t realised, if you click on the images they enlarge to fill the screen – thank you Mr Ritchie!)
Wednesday, 09.05 UK time… They all slept well. They’ve had breakfast and are off to Bayeux.
Wednesday, 6.30pm UK time… A super day again today. After breakfast it was back on the coach to Bayeux and a tour of the famous tapestry followed by a visit to the cathedral and some very successful shopping at some French markets and, of course, the imperative purchase and consumption of ice cream!
Then a much more sombre visit to the Bayeux war cemetery where the children placed a poppy cross and said some prayers for the fallen soldiers.
From there it was on to Pointe du Hoc where the children had lots of fun!
Now they are on the way back to the centre for some dinner and then games and preparation for the all important talent show!
Thursday 8.30pm UK time… They have had another fabulous day today in France:
1. A moving but lovely visit to the American Cemetery.
2. Visit to Arromanches where we met some amazing war veterans and spoke with them. They said we were the most lovely children and the children were a real credit to St Thomas’. They asked amazing questions and the veterans said how touched they were that they cared about their experiences so much.
After some time shopping in town, visiting Omaha Beach and making our new friends we headed up the hill to the 360 cinema where we had a viewing of the film with some veterans. It was especially moving to share this with them and we then had a further chance to meet a 96 year old engineer who helped to build and transport the Mullbury Harbour. They also loved meeting the children.
Outside the cinema we couldn’t help but try to create France 2018 with 55 bodies (see photo evidence below!).
3. Our final stop was the German Cemetery- different but also very moving. We said a prayer and laid a poppy wreath and poem.
4. Quiz tonight to be followed by infamous talent show after dinner. Photos will be posted as and when acts happen but we are very excited for the show with our bus driver Steve as a guest judge!
Friday 3.00pm UK time… Today they spent the morning studying Grandcamp-Maisy in preparation for a comparative study back at school. After some fabulous sketching and observational skills they are now on their way home, having stopped for lunch at a supermarket.
We are still expecting them at 9.00pm but if there is any change we will let you know by parentmail and text… 🙂
